This timeless collection of short stories encompasses a vast history of famous literary heroes and their romantic tales of bravery, perseverance and compassion. Beginning with Socrates and the ancient Greeks, James Baldwin narrates the stories of larger-than-life figures like Leonidas and the Brave Three Hundred, Napoleon Bonaparte, Robin Hood, Sir Walter Raleigh, and George Washington. These stories illustrate the most celebrated protagonists of all time, and will entertain readers of all ages as much today as they have for centuries past. Originally published by American Book Company in 1896 as educational literature for grade schools, these stories will delight and educate children, laying the foundation for future literary studies as nearly all are frequently alluded to in modern poetry and prose. Children will take pleasure in having these stories read aloud to them, while older children will delight in reading them to themselves.

Note: I always forget that Amazon lumps all the reviews of the same book together, no matter the edition. My review is specifically regarding the Living Book Press edition.Excellent quality! I'm using this book as part of my homeschool year. So many reprinted public domain books use OCR and are full of errors; this one was obviously put together with care and attention to detail. As an Ambleside Online user, I appreciate that the editor rearranged the stories in the order they are used throughout the school year.

Fifty Famous Stories Retold James Baldwin 9781420934687 Books Reviews
My kids all love these. No problems getting them to read at all. Great for narrating Charlotte Mason style. Great for read alouds to younger kids and for independent reading for readers. I learned plenty as a homeschool mom.
The Living Book Press copy is awesome! Buy it! Large, clean font with original pictures. Super easy to read. The content itself is very enjoyable. My 6yo loves the stories (and so do I). Short, but memorable stories that introduce children to timeless stories in history.
The book appears to have the complete collection of stories. I'll be using it for our homeschool.
However, seven pages have replaced quotation marks and apostrophes with caret brackets. I'll be correcting those.
I read this book as a child from a 1905 publishing that my father had read as a child. These stories were by far my favorites as a child. I recently purchased two copies so my granddaughters could enjoy.
I bought this to read to my still-unborn grandchild, but tried out a couple of stories on my 9 and 11 year old grandsons. They loved them. The 9 year old even woke up the next morning and told me how much he enjoyed having those stories read to them. They are short enough that I was able to let each choose a story and then read them one I chose. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to read to children.
My 5 y/o loves these stories. I didn't think he would understand the language, but both of us are having a terrific time reading these together. It's great to find a book that we both enjoy.
There is some racist language in a couple stories, which is (unfortunately) to be expected in old books. It's a good idea to read to your children so you can skip the words you don't want them to repeat.
I purchased this to use as a living history book for our Charlotte Mason style homeschool. The stories are fine, a little shorter than I expected (1 page or less). Also there is no information/background on the stories and NO DATES to help fit this in with our history timeline. The formating and illustrations are a little rough.
Note I always forget that lumps all the reviews of the same book together, no matter the edition. My review is specifically regarding the Living Book Press edition.
